Martha’s Legacy

It is hard to put into words what Martha Vandervoort meant to east Alabama. Many have described her as the “Mother Teresa of Calhoun County,” and I know of no one who would argue with that. Martha did, in less than three decades, what the vast majority of us don’t accomplish in a lifetime. She was the very definition of a servant.

Over the years, she served in numerous leadership roles in the community. She was an active member of Anniston First United Methodist Church and was involved with the Angel Tree Summer Day Camp, Meals on Wheels, the Anniston Soup Bowl, and the Community Enabler of Calhoun County. Martha served as Mission Convenor of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church and was coordinator of the Children of Chernobyl, a summer program for children from Belarus. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Calhoun County and the Junior League of Calhoun County. She was instrumental in bringing Habitat for Humanity to Calhoun County, where she once served as Board President. Additionally, Martha was a member of the Parnassus Study Club and the Anniston Garden Guild.

Interfaith Ministries is where, arguably, Martha made her most significant contributions. She served as the Executive Director and oversaw all programs of the agency. Martha had a burden and love for the homeless; she started Interfaith’s Open Doors program, which assisted the area’s homeless. “She really felt very strongly about that, because so many of them are shunned by the community.” Martha was instrumental in expanding the free dental care program for adults. She truly cared for the homeless, the poor and for children caught in difficult circumstances.

Martha dedicated her life to serving others and embodied the mission statement of Interfaith Ministries, “Bringing God’s People Together To Serve God’s People in Need.”

I hope you will consider supporting our efforts, through the Martha Vandervoort Memorial Classic, to keep her legacy going as all proceeds from the tournament will be donated to charities.
